Michael Hughes is a veteran of the Nashville music scene, having first interned at Hummingbird Studios on Music Row in 1997. Since then his career has taken many twists and turns—Hughes has worked as a professional songwriter, independent artist and music publisher, whose original music has been heard in numerous television shows including 30 episodes of NBC’s The Voice. As a session and touring musician, he has performed in all 48 contiguous US states, many foreign countries, and more than 40 times on the Grand Ole Opry. He has appeared on over 50 TV shows including The Tonight Show, Ellen, Good Morning America, The View, The Today Show, & The CMA Awards.
His passion for recording has been constant throughout his career, and he always dreamed of opening his own studio. When he crossed paths with legendary studio designer Carl Tatz in 2011, the plans for Hartwell Studios (named for the South Carolina lake near Hughes’ hometown) began to take shape. Hughes saw it as a labor of love and built much of the studio himself. Over more than a dozen years, he has hand-selected every item in his collection of gear, which features several analog pieces with one-of-a kind modifications to give Hartwell Studios a truly unique sound. From vintage German tube mics to a cutting-edge Antelope master clock, Hughes uses the best of old and new technologies to marry contemporary digital editing with analog summing and signal processing. Since opening Hartwell Studios in 2013, he has worked as a producer and mix engineer with artists and writers representing Warner Music, Sony Records, Curb Records, Broken Bow, and many more.
